Mixing genres from rock to folk to soul to bluegrass; flavours as varied as jazz and hip hop curl through the sound of Washington Area Music Association's "Best Contemporary Folk Group" - ilyAIMY.
Available as anything from a duo to sextet depending on space & budget, ilyAIMY can field all-original or cover-heavy sets, & can be comfortable in anything from an intimate, folk environment to a heavy metal festival (or even win an award at a hip hop comedy jam).
ilyAIMY combines award-winning songwriting, tight male/female harmonies, signature intricate slap-style guitar work, ukulele, djembe and more with a curiously Muppet-like stage presence for an exquisite package. For larger shows rob Hinkal (guitar & vocals), Heather Aubrey Lloyd (guitar, ukulele, djembe, vocals) and Kristen Jones (electric cello, vocals) are joined by any combination of Rowan Corbett (also of Carolina Chocolate Drops and Rhiannon Giddens Band as recently seen on CBS' Late Show w. David Letterman and Austin City Limits - Irish bones, djembe, vocals), Sharif Kellogg (piano and bass) and Joey Jenkins (drums).... We're versatile.
If you have questions about booking ilyAIMY, we're actually quite friendly. Please contact us at email@example.com.
ilyAIMY playing their original tune Glom of Nit - Frenetic and precise, passionate and aggressive.
ilyAIMY playing Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". We perform this as a duo, we perform this as a sextet, we perform this with a Japanese taiko orchestra. It scales remarkably well. Excuse the remnants of our Halloween costumes!
ilyAIMY throwing down with Bill Withers' "Use Me".
In the absurd remnants of our Muppet costumes from Halloween - we perform a deadly serious song - Heather's tune "Phantom" .
ilyAIMY performs a number of covers, old school and new school - from old traditional folk tunes to this Iggy Azalea cover...
A charming rob song called "Natural 20".
Generally touring as a trio – with djembe (Heather Lloyd), cello (Kristen Jones), and acoustic guitars (rob Hinkal), ukulele, award-winning songwriting and tight three-part harmony, the band has spent much of the past decade and a half on the road performing at and winning accolades from folk festivals, hip hop comedy jams, songwriting contests, clothing-optional resorts and bait shops. They are in turns angsty, funny, poignant and beautiful with a broad range of high-energy covers and originals.
“A bone-rattling acoustic act... with driving lyrical force [and] male/female harmonies that lock in, lift, drop and pull ... And then they slow it down and rip you open.”
- Jake Stephens, On Tap Magazine
"ilyAIMY ain't your grandpa's folk music - and thank goodness. They are fearless writers and performers… Voices this rich and emotionally hard-hitting - equal parts velvet darkness, barely contained heartbreak, and hard-won, unstoppable joy - don't come around often.” – Pat Wictor, Brother Sun
ilyAIMY's not a cover band, but can comfortably fill a 3 - 4 hour set with close to 70% cover songs if that's what seems appropriate. ilyAIMY brings a unique twist to the following artists :
