I wonder what it says about America today that we’re making SO many vigilante movies… I guess we’ve always had a tradition of cowboys taking the law into their own hands and shooting up the bad guys, giving them a justice far more final than what our justice system will generally hand out.
Mara ran across a call for action out in the Midwest about a woman who’s accused a man of rape – but, you know, the word “rape” is far too accusatory, as is “forced” and “nonconsensual” – too much judgement attached… and so the woman isn’t really allowed to imply that she’s been raped… (oh, and the jury doesn’t know that these rules are in place)… in a justice system where THAT’S possible, no WONDER we have fantasies of killing people who’ve done wrong.
Who HASN’T been wronged by a cop, by some system or another, who hasn’t wished someone would go after the cable companies and explain in no uncertain terms what’s fair and what’s not? Amplify that to the degree that we don’t trust our protectors or our politicians, and I’m amazed you don’t hear about Die Hards and Shooters and Boondock Saints every night on the news, and that we haven’t found some way of rewarding any Lethal Weapons that might be out there.
Of course, the real heroes probably aren’t pretty enough, and anyone passionate enough to fight for their version of justice probably isn’t smart enough to avoid getting caught… but still, there was an article published after Batman Begins that stated it would only cost $3,000,000 and training to become the Dark Knight…
