Well, we’re off again. Wandering, traveling, putting every penny into our gas tank. It’s a little frightening to be traveling in a big-ass truck – worrying about 3 people rather than just Heather and I. Rowan eats breakfast, Heather and I don’t. I don’t go to parties, but if Heather and Rowan are going… I guess I end up doing so. Rowan and I listen to disco. Heather’s sad to be outvoted.
All in all, it’s really good to be traveling with Rowan. It’s a LOT of fun to have a third person in the car and all that bullshit about three being a crowd is just that. BULLshit!
I’m writing from Vic’s Midnight Cafe. We’re playing their open mic tonight and a proper gig tomorrow. I’d been hearing about this venue for a long time and as soon as we passed it on the street I could see why. Covered in Christmas lights and patches of paint with a UFO Sidebar, it’s pretty much a rob kind of place. Any spot where as I’m going to the bathroom I’m thinking “I’ve got to come back in here… with my CAMERA!!!” is a rob kind of place.
Hey venues! Decorating your bathrooms is important!!! Dare I say! AWESOME!!! I Love something to look at. Something to admire. Something to ponder. Something to make the passage of all that I’m passing a little more relaxed.
In any case… we hit California, PA last night – our beloved Jozart (where I’ve taken many a restroom photograph) and played their open mic with Peter Wright. It was the first night of the trio out on the road and we had a great though slightly clumsy time. Rowan changes up the energy a lot and it was the first time for a lot of the Cal U Puppies (Cuppies?) seeing his mighty caress of man-music.
And so, thinking about Rowan, thinking about music – thinking about how much I’m just generally in Love with Life I’m definitely in the mood to be listening to whoever it is who’s on the stage here at Vic’s. Killer lead guitarist, fun musicians just having a really good time up on the stage. It doesn’t hurt that they just played one of my absolutely favourite songs… what is it you may ask?
Go ahead and guess: you think it was Spice Up Your Life by the Spice Girls? No. Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi? Nope. Staying Alive by the BeeGees? Sex Bomb by Tom Jones? Wrong and wrong and more wrong. Ghost Riders in the Sky!!! WHEEE!!!!
(an hour later – they keep getting louder and we’ve all fled to the safety of ear plugs… as the foam slowly embraces the fit of my earballs and the band fades to a reasonable level so that I can once again appreciate them. the lead guitarists are pretty cool but the keyboard player thinks the train whistle sound on his instrument is clever… and it’s not)
