October 1st, 2007.

Ah, the first of the month. Time to pay bills. And it seemed like such an idyllic day. Last night we played the absolutely fantastically rediculous Church on the Rocks open stage at the Hideaway Saloon in Louisville, KY. Hosted by the disturbingly charismatic Troubadours of Divine Bliss, I have never seen an open mic run like this.

With Aimee (of ToDB) calling out names and AMENS!!! (and awomens and atrannies!!!) like some faith healer and Renee’s cheetah fur hat acting like a beacon for brotherhood (and sisterhood… and trannyhood) this was simply one of the most unique nights of my Life. Coupled with the surreal strangeness of the festival from the night before, I now have a pretty intensely strange impression of Kentucky. This was probably assisted by the perceptual shift brought on by the moonshine…. frankly, when in Kentucky, if you’re not going to risk yourself on some 140 proof moonshine brought unto you by a beautiful woman in a cowboy hat and a man playing a hybrid banjo-bass, what the HELL are you doing there? NO, I would NOT have had any if the guy who’d distilled it HADN’T been wearing overalls. I have SOME sense!!!

Just proof that sometimes I drive. Unfortunately, it was a very sunny day and Rowan couldn’t get a low enough shutter speed to show the blur of the outside scenery, but I assure you the vehicle WAS in motion!!!

Some good talent crossed the stage and some friends from one of the bands at the festival showed up. We’d only managed to catch Weber’s last tune on Saturday, but the saxophone / fiddle combination caught me and we ended up jamming with them long into the night.

Rowan got this shot of Teneia Sanders as she was hosting the open mic at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar in Louisville, Kentucky. She has a deep, honeyed voice that can range from husk and grit to sweet and fluting. I thought she was exquisite.
We met a lot of twins at Stevie Ray’s open mic. They made me titter. Rowan likes to catch me tittering. Okay.. perhaps I was guffawing.

Morning brings calm and church bells, despite the fact that I’m desparately allergic to the Weber couch that I slept on. I hope church bells and calm don’t bring zombies. This house, though beautiful, is not easily defensible.
