I find politics disturbing. Theoretically, historically and geographically I’m blue. Sometimes I’m a little red. Sometimes I’m a lot more red – but most of the time I’m just horrified that people think it’s that simple. I’m reading the headlines on wtop.com, the local news station… and from fact checking (big surprise! both candidates liberally stretched truths and misquoted and abused veracity to the point of slander) to an interesting article about people’s reactions in different parts of the country (gasp! the Republicans who were watching saw Obama stumble and falter and the Democrats saw McCain as slow and haughty) which at the end discussed people who actually did cross lines a little bit… though I’d argue that’s only an option for people sitting on their couches at home. Anyone in a public place with a group of their peers has probably got their mind made up already…

And then, because I’m a glutton for punishment I read some commentary and here I’m genuinely disgusted. If anyone has any doubts as to the true nature of our country, they need to go hang out on the forums of one of the most listened to news stations in the nation’s capital. Racial slurs abound (can someone telling someone else that they just want to be on their knees in front of a black man REALLY be tagged as “funny”?!!?) and negative commentary on George Bush is uninformed and almost inevitably flagged as “offensive”. Poorly written attacks and random falsehoods mix freely with personal insults and random tangents. I know it’s the nature of blogs and internet conversation threads, but can people really want to advertise their stupidity this strongly?
