February 15th, 2010.

In an effort to be more connected with my local scene, I joined the Baltimore Songwriters Association and went to my first meeting last Monday. I met up with a couple of old friends and made some new ones and was treated to some great tenor horn playing. (she was accompanying the eternally-shorts-wearing Ken Gutberlet)

I-95 again. Covered in snow again. More coming tonight. Driving’s going to be brutal unless a lot of people have a lot more sense than us and stay home. They’re remaking “We Are The World”. Where once was Bob Dylan there’s now Lil Wayne, singing his part under the heavy watch of autotune software. Come on – if you can’t perform, let your percussionist sing it.

All in all the world’s gone mad.

I got a little mushy about being part of a great musical community. Unfortunately I think that most don’t realize it, don’t know what it’s like in some other circles, and beyond that don’t think I’m being particularly genuine. There’s definitely aspects of our scene that I dislike – and there are performers that I hate, but there’s no need to get catty – the positives HUGELY outweigh the negatives.
