Oh I overslept this morning. Getting up and out and about I can sort of see why. There’s not much to be seen in our world today but great and grey and more grey.
Kristen swerves to avoid a chunk of blown-out tire, there are police lights up ahead, a new traffic camera on our section of 695. That means we’ll pass four of them today. I can think of where another four… no… five Live off the top of my head that I pass by frequently. Oh. Six. Not counting the ones by schools. A friend of mine got snapped in California recently. I guess we’ve got it easy. His was a $300 ticket and another $400 fine if not paid within 30 days. We seem to top out at $150 in the DC area.
C’mon and tell me what’s the good word? I don’t care about the latest pop shit I just wanna know what YOU heard… I’m paraphrasing Cilla Bonnie but probably mutilating the text so much that it’s unrecognizable. But there IS good news: ilyAIMY just got notification that we’re one of the 24 Emerging Artists picked to perform at Falconridge Folk Festival! I’m always amused by that term – emerging from WHAT? I always imagine some horrible egg filled with gooey yolk that we’re fighting free of, fingers slipping against our guitars, eyes blinking against the stage lights, audience cheering encouragement as we stare confusedly around. Someone mail me a prosthetic eggtooth (a la a protoceratops). I feel I’ve been “emerging” for a decade.
A number of the other artists on the 24-person list have similar accolades to ours, but I’m horribly aware that everyone else’s Kerrville nomination is no older than 2 years (mine’s from ’05, I think?). One has glowing words said about her by Michael Bolton, another won the “open for Bon Jovi” contest. I’d have liked to do that. The only other local is Karyn Oliver and I’ll be curious to see how her springy curls survive a couple of days of summertime camping. I’m glad our performance is on the FIRST day – when we’re theoretically fresh! Karyn also got Kerrville this year. We are all emergent! It’s an emergency!
I overslept this morning. It’s entirely possible that I still am!
