Weird dreams LAST night too…. Gig dreams. Some sort of vast mansion space – and now that I think about it I think it was some sort of art gallery because there were large auditorium spaces and small almost closet spaces, halls that were cordoned off and darkened. Heather and I performed in the auditorium and then spent some time exploring the rest of the show. Now that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of the arts and music show that we played years ago in Cleveland with Xela…
After our performance I made my way to the furthest end of the whole building where there was one last stage in a small triangular room, mostly blocked off by a gate. Before I reached the stage I had a couple of people asking for my autograph… accompanied by a request for my email address. It was on a cool block of wood sort of thing but when I flipped it over I realized that it was one of the other performers trying to trick me into signing up for their mailing list. Annoyed, I pushed past them into the last performance space and found myself watching a duo on a small triangular stage. The lead player was a woman using a very ornate brass and wood MIDI breath controller to play sax-sounds while occasionally singing into a mic stand that was being held up by a female midget.
The other half of the duo was rapidly picking up different objects and making sounds and then putting them down again. They were very well-orchestrated noises, with the real crowd-pleaser being a pitch-perfect reproduction of the steel drum intro to Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” made by the clattering of a large kettle and its lid….
It occurs to me that Heather and I heard that song on the way home from the gig last night. I guess that’s what it was doing in my subconscious….
I woke up grumpy, looking at a calendar of someone who’s somewhere that I’d like to be, watching their videos and thinking unkind thoughts about how they belong to the Mighty Wind world of folk and that I’m jealous of the very fine production values and how they don’t deserve them…
I spend most of the rest of the day plugged into distortion and wah pedals making most unfolky noises.
Last night we performed at Leaky Pete’s out in Cambridge, MD. Heather’s getting better, but she’s still feeling poorly and we actually had to say “no” when asked if we’ll play longer in return for direct cash infusion. It was a good night, I was feeling relaxed on guitar, even receiving compliments from an LA session player by the amazing name “Quintavius Jones”. We had a great time but forgot to order mussels till after the kitchen closed – the long drive home was accompanied by a bright, bright moon shining off the bay and Sade playing over Pandora.
It’s nice to be sleeping…. Now if only I’d have dreams that seemed to have any sort of MEANING!!!
