April 23rd, 2012.

We’ve arrived in Raleigh just in time for the grand opening of the new wing of their Natural Science museum – our friend Jamie made a point of driving past it and now I’ve GOT TO GO!!!

It’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood – and that neighbourhood is Cary, NC.  The weather’s been grey and drizzly for a couple of days, but today the skies have opened up and I literally see not a cloud in the sky.  Breezes are swiffering the ground and the air’s crisp and smells of spring.  It’s kind of absolutely gorgeous out.

Sunday we took the day off and played with the cats and played Scrabble and generally enjoyed ourselves with Jamie and Barnaby.

I’ve never known another Barnaby.  He enjoys having a unique name and is concerned that the remake of Dark Shadows will put the name back on the map and that in upcoming years it will become less singular.  I’m sort of the opinion that “Barnaby” is a WHOLE lot of fun to say and that the more we as a people have the opportunity to let it roll off our tongue the better.

Monday was more of a work day, sitting in a coffeehouse all day uploading and downloading and typing and tapping and making at least ONE phone call.  In the evening we headed over to Loco Lu’s Coffeehouse.  T’was highly recommended by at least one other player we knew and it’d been on my radar ever since booking one of our LAST tours through North Carolina years and years ago.  They host a lot of different events including Locopalooza (which I think is what I’d initially asked to play) – it was interesting to finally arrive at the venue and see what I’d been hearing about all this time.

The chocolate place.
In our wanderings, Jamie took us over to a wonderful artisan chocolate shop called Escazu. They make everything from scratch right there (grinding from the BEAN no less) and above is a poorly shot pic of the machinery that does it. The place smells amazing and the chocolate is no less delectable than the smell. It’s a much smaller selection than Chocoholique in Columbus, OH – but is comfortable and warm and wonderful and what they lack in quantity they definitely make up for in quality.

It was smaller than I’d expected, but the black bean thing was good and the couches were comfortable, and sure enough their list of upcoming events didn’t disappoint.  Top on my list of things I thought were really cool was that they were working their way through a list of generators and refrigerators and solar ovens… you know, the things that you see online that you’re sure can’t POSSIBLE work?  Well, they’re actually building them and trying them out.

Some of them work, some of them don’t – but I Love the idea that they’re at least trying them out.

The open mic itself was very low-key, the high point for me was a guy who’d brought at least a dozen Native American-style flutes and played them along with a keyboard app on his iPhone…. Which sounded better than the big fancy Roland piano that was played later in the evening…. Well played pants piano.  Well played.  Pun intended.

Today we’re making the time to go check out the new North Carolina Natural Science Museum.  Unlike Indianapolis’ museum, all of their dinosaurs are apparently on the INSIDE, but perhaps they’ll still be awesome.

Finally, the other cat has decided to investigate my presence. I guess I’ve generally got to wait till around 2am before the beest gives up hope on any known human.
