Tonight we played a college. A damn discouraging college unfortunately.
Now – I Love my band. I think ilyAIMY’s pretty damned amazing – and though I know we’re not the BEST band in the world, and I know we’re not the SEXIEST band in the world, and though I know we’re not the catchiest or poppiest or flashiest band in the world – we’re still PRETTY damned good, sexy, catchy and flashy (yeah, we’re not poppy). And above all we’re INTERESTING.
We played to a massive influx of college kids tonight that didn’t even give us a second glance. In all fairness, I think we were billed second to bacon, but there must’ve been about 500 kids that filtered through the show and almost none made eye contact, few even glanced in our direction. I don’t know that I’ve felt that invisible in forever.
The band took it for what it was – I just don’t know how you can walk past Rowan playing bones or me going slappy happy on my guitar or Heather going nuts on the djembe and not take a closer look – at least to maybe figure out what the Hell Kristen is playing – meh.
We had fun playing to one another and we had a couple of fans who’d come specifically to see us, but we simply couldn’t compete with the bacon or the pie throwing booth. Strange but true.
Eating at Da Levee is also something that has to happen while we’re in Columbus, OH. We’ve lost a couple of good friends recently. Gordon Velasco’s memorial party was the same night as our performance at Edith May’s Paradise – and my mom was hardcore and managed to do both. Here she is wearing the Gordon Memorial shirt with her Gordon Memorial lei… we played a song for him on ukuelele and generally raised our glasses. Ah angry people – I have no real clue what they’re boycotting though. “All smoke ban states and cities”. Whatever that means. Though I often agree with external Libertarian statements – actually meeting these peeps (or their cars) generally leaves me feeling kind of like I’ve had a brush with craaaazy.
Heading out west after playing with Justin McMahon while listening to Justin McMahon about to go meet up with Justin McMahon so we can play more with Justin McMahon. Yeah. We like that guy. Sunny in Maryland on route 70. Rainy in West Virginia on route 70. ….And checking out the new toy store in Short North in Columbus, OH – marvelous stuff! Though I didn’t have enough time to truly wander and explore, we’ll be back next week! We rolled into Columbus, OH with just enough time before the show to get to the important things – like grabbing coffee and chocolate from Le Chocoholique…
