Back at Teavolve’s open mic w Justin Myles!

Bar gig. Not much to say about it. It was a bar gig.

No, that’s too simple. It’s actually a fun show. Firestone’s in Frederick is a good deal classier than your standard bar, the food is spectacular, the staff is wonderful and the space is beautiful. It’s a late show. It’s a three hour show. The former can be a little rough but the latter’s generally just about perfect – but we do get some people working really hard at being a special kind of drunk.

Last night in the midst of a wonderful show we got to deal with a girl who was steadily getting more unsteady. She’d been cut off by the bar and was weaving. She’d been singing along with us earlier in the evening and her boyfriend had been trying to get us to let her sing into the mic… which wasn’t going to happen… at the end of the second hour (around midnight) she and her boy decided dancing was the thing. I’d hoped that he might be able to control her careening self, but she nearly smacked into me and my microphone, whirled back and then stumbled over into Heather’s mic.

I grabbed girlie by the arm and chucked her back towards her enabler and Heather caught the mic stand. It gave “Love a Girl” a special amount of snarl. We didn’t miss much of a beat, just gave the music a bit of rev and went on with the night – but man, I hope she remembers enough to feel embarrassed. Unfortunately I imagine she’ll just remember thinking the whole thing was a good time. That’s why I have a line in our contracts that states “venue is responsible for maintaining a reasonable distance between the performer and the audience. If this distance is NOT maintained, ilyAIMY accepts no responsibility or liability for damage or injury…”

Today we drive up to NERFA – gonna be a very, very different scene.
