January 22nd, 2014.

Fields of snow upon departing Belleville, IL – we’d been warned about the random weathers of the Midwest in January – but we’ve been very, very lucky so far!.
Wandering around Nashville, TN we discovered the Jackalope Brewery! (for those trying to make ANY sense of this, we were at in Nashville on January 21st!). Jackalope jackalope jackalope

Being on tour and being sick is pretty fucking miserable. We’re not on tour. I’m still sick. This is worse – you don’t have the notion that you “just have to make it through the show” – you’re supposed to be PACKING THAT FUN IN and the body just wants to go back to bed. I’ve been trying to believe myself better, but eventually the truth was that I just wasn’t up for going out last night. We got in to Whitney and Freddie’s pretty early in the day and met their kid and we played for THEM instead. We played more than we would’ve if we’d gone out to an open mic, and having Freddie and Whitney and Haley dance for us was probably a whole lot more fun to boot.

To kill some time and experience some Nashville and to get OUT OF TH ECOLD we ducked into the Johnny Cash museum. A lot of interesting tidbits of facts, some good upclose looks at his instruments and his suits and a realization that holy crap he was a tall, tall man. And reading his writing the realization that here was a man who perpetrated most of what he wanted through sheer force of will. He had an image and a voice and the just did it as hard as he could for as long as he could – and you get the impression that he cursed anyone who got in his way and left them behind. I imagine his physical presence was a WHOLE lot of intimidating.

There was Play-Do and rabbits and cat barf and Magic and generally all the things that can make a night pretty wonderful. Unfortunately, there was also snot and headaches and drippiness. All in all it made what SHOULD’VE been a miserable night a lot of fun.

Today we’re making our way to Louisville, KY after having bummed around Music Row for a bit, visiting the Johnny Cash Museum and listening to a couple of singer/songwriters on the streets and in the windows and generally lamenting that of course it’s about 20 degrees outside.

As we head back North and East it’s only going to get worse, unfortunately – and my head is just full of pressure, my ears are stuffy – betwixt that and the weather it’s kind of hard to be having a good time. Sigh.
