The Teavolve Café & Lounge open mic happens just about every Monday at Teavolve, signup at 6pm, performances from 7-10pm. 2 songs / 10 minutes whichever’s shorter, with a PG13 environment – and is hosted by rob Hinkal of the band ilyAIMY. It’s one of 48 venues to be invited to participate in Shure’s National Open Mic Night, 2014 and rob’s other open mics have garnered “Best of DC” from Dcmusicdownload.com and recognition from the Library of Congress. September 8th, Heather and I got together really early at Teavolve to have a good solid work day before going on the road. After a couple of hours of office work we took the time to do something I have never really done before – wander Harbor East! My last open mic at Teavolve till the end of October was one Hell of a show.
Certainly part of the amazingness of September 8th at Teavolve in Baltmore, MD – featured artist Ayreheart simply tore off the roof. I’ve seen them plenty of times, and had even seen them the previous day at the Takoma Park Folk Festival – but nothing prepared me for the sheer PASSION that came barreling out of them at my little open mic. There were absolutely stunning – and no small part of that is Brian finally seeming comfortable with letting his voice off the chain. This is one of my favourite regulars : Dave Benham and his son Thilman (cello) and his friend Dan (percussion). Happily got them on the calendar as a feature for when I get back!
