Tonight at Teavolve was just stunning. I don’t know that there was any one performer in particular that blew my mind. From that front I might even argue that the night was a little lack-luster – like, there was no ONE person who just floored me, but overall the night felt good, took you from heights to depths, kept you wiggling and happy and was a broad spectrum of STUFF that keeps me enamoured with open mics as a format.

From beginning to end – Hell, I’ll count my own performance in that – we (Joey and I) threw down with “Spring” and “HARM”, two tunes that don’t see the light of day often (curse you drop B!) really hit the room, and then it was off into the list. Our usual trip through lounge singing Sinatra-ish-ness was over as painlessly as it was going to be and then it was into talented singer/songwriters – a country couple that out-Texed the two Texans in the room with a rendition of “Mommas Don’t Let Your Children Grow Up to be Cowboys”… we had storytelling about small towns in Texas, we had a stunning poem about child abuse that left the room speechless (maybe THAT was the one person that floored me… holy shit… I’m glad I don’t have stories like that to tell), we had a great pseudo-sitar, flute and drum jam – Derrick Credito’s upped the game into a band format, a couple of local powerhouses from the Baltimore Songwriters Association, and then of course my featured artist, Eric Daino : he’s a writer’s writer, writing for the writers. No-one else has ever quite captured the stigma of quitting your dayjob and home to follow Life on the road in such a powerful way. I really relate to his topics, to his tunes. Plus, good friends, good burger, the edges of rain in Baltimore…

It was a good night. Thought I had more to say. But that’s probably enough.
