Moment two also swirled around Chuck – though it was an open mic thing and a Dave Benham jam… Chris Colvin of Takoma Park, one of House of Musical Traditions’ more eclectic teachers, had come up to Teavolve to be my featured artist – I’d asked him about it a couple of months ago because I like what he does, think it’s pretty unique and he’s so willing to show off the things that he knows and talk about them. Too many performers treat their music and their knowledge as if it’s something proprietary. I pride myself on having learned a LOT at open mics and believe it’s the best way to get taught.
Chris is a good teacher and I’ve got too many singer/songwriters who just want to talk about THEMSELVES (myself included). So I wasn’t sure what Chris was going to do but he showed up with a synth guitar and a couple of didgeridoos and did a very fun music and dance feature with his friend Rimi Basu.
As usual when there’s an absurdly proficient musician in the house, Dave Benham approached and asked our fair feature if he’d be willing to just jam on his set. Dave is a really valuable glue in the Teavolve scene and is frequently hooking players together in unorthodox ways – the jam that sprang forth from the musical loins of Chris Colvin, Dave Benham and Chuck that Madd OX nabbed everyone’s ears and is everything that I Love about meeting people through music. Something new and sinuous evolved from these players of dramatically different tastes, and without any guidance other than a key and a beat, they created something brand new. Rimi was once again inspired to dance and asked if I thought they’d mind… I encouraged her to jump in… the room was transported. T’was a good time.
