What a week. And, of course for a musician on Friday night the week’s just beginning – but even with that taken into account, it’s been pretty brutal.
Our friend Sue came in from Saint Louis a week ago in the midst of torrential rains and delayed flights. She was supposed to come in during the afternoon, but between one thing and another, we nabbed her from the platform about 12 hours later than initially planned after a gig that Rowan and I had played down in DC that had combined all the worst aspects of low-attendance, brutally non-present parking and viciously omnipresent traffic.
The next day, Kristen especially had a grueling path as she and Susan got up early and headed down to the Washington Folk Festival, where Lulu’s Fate was performing BEFORE they came up to Frederick to join us for a 3+ hour slot as the headliner for Frederick Festival of the Arts. Though the rain delay meant we got a little bit of time to actually explore the festival, this ill-fated evening got closed down around an hour into our performance.
Well, that means we get to go home early and rest so we can get up the next day and found out that rain has wiped Sunday’s festival as well!
It gives us a welcome day at home with Joey and I jamming as Kristen cooks and Susan absorbs, but now absolutely NOTHING has gone to plan…
Continue that the NEXT night as a canceled featured artist makes for an off-kilter night. Low attendance here too means that everything just feels OFF despite the fact that it became just an exquisite night of music. Tuesday, battling weather for a board meeting… Wednesday – well, you just READ about Wednesday… last night at Firestone’s was actually kind of awesome. Despite having a sports crowd, it was still a CROWD and we played hard to them.
It WAS interesting to play Counting to absolutely zero response though.
Sigh.
Late last night we dropped into a Sheetz because I was craving SOMETHING, anything – and my tour reflexes kicked in: My stomach was apparently absolutely convinced that we were about to get into the car and drive 6 hours and it was with every ounce of energy I deflected myself from the coffee drinks to something more suitable to EVER sleeping….
Today we woke up to the news of Anthony Bourdain’s death and much, much closer-to-home death of one of my favourite local guitarists, David Glaser. A tearful morning meant that I don’t think we were able to give the full emotional attention to Susan’s departure – and now we’ve just finished cleaning the house for our friend Mosno’s bASHelor party.
I’m not ENTIRELY in the mood for a bash, party, gathering – I’d like to read a book, eat too much and go to bed.
Oh. And last week’s rain-or-shine festival gig that got canceled due to rain, was scheduled for this weekend. It just got canceled again because the forecast is pretty definite on the incoming rain.
I’m hugely grateful that tomorrow’s show is IN DOORS.
1 thought on “A Bad Week.”
yeah…iffin’ I ever decide to plan a Baltimore visit time frame around full band gig opportunities, I shall be sure they are INDOORS!!!!! And I’ll hope for the Journal entry encompassing my visit not to be titled, “A Bad Week”…sigh….Hey…I got a duo version of Gaze at Teavolve and the hope for a return of said song to present day set lists!!!
