Today I went by my friend Art’s place of employment – the Maryland Sound Institute. I’ve been there once before, and it’s an immense warehouse of sound technology with endless rows of speakers and subwoofers and mics and DI boxes and racks where they build them and tables where they REBUILD them and trucks where they take them off to various huge shows and bays where they check them back IN from huge shows… and then there’s the gigantic circle of subwoofers they use to recreate the stress of rocket launches for vibration-testing satellite components. It’s all pretty nuts.
In theory we were there to talk about sound for the upcoming Takoma Park Folk Festival, which is FAR more complicated than it ought to be – but in practice…. SUBWOOFERS THE SIZE OF ROCKETS!!!!
