Mai actually got off shift… and then stuck around to read for us!

Monday night was an inspiration. Though it seems to be a new thing that people are simply rolling in later (I have even talked to Sunni, the owner, about starting later… but she gave me a LOOK) and that always makes me nervous, by 7.30 or so we really had a full room and an amazing list. A couple of people we haven’t seen in a while, plenty of Daves, Matt and Kosi… just a fabulous collection of performers – and our (usual) server Mai, who kicked off the list!

Read.

Katie Callahan

Katie has come out to the open mic a couple of times and really shone, and I ain’t just talking about her propensity for shimmery make up.

Her writing is beautifully complicated, her chording unusual, and her voice is like the best things from female artists in the late 90s all distilled into something comfortable, powerful, familiar and yet with just enough agility to always keep you guessing as to what melody she’s going to find next. The recording from tonight is going to be one I keep going back to for a while….
