I needed to get out. Fortunately convinced Kristen it was time to get out. We got out. We just drove and drove and drove. Took straight routes. Frederick turns into Pratt turns into the Harbor and then we wandered Federal Hill.
I didn’t know its history. I knew that at some point in our history there’d been a gun emplacement there. I’d sort of assumed it was for the sake of preserving the city against invasion during the Revolutionary War or something.
I didn’t know they’d installed cannon in 1861 pointed towards the city to keep it from supporting the Confederacy. Not really proud to know that that was necessary. Didn’t know the history. There’s a lot I don’t know. That’s especially poignant today. Flags are at half staff still honouring the cop who died in the attack on the Capitol.
I’m trying not to think about that too much. We’re just getting OUT.
We walked around Federal Hill ignorant of the history. We walked the Harbor and looked at the water. We drove home and picked up fried chicken. Somewhere between home and where it turns into Pratt, someone was shot on Frederick.
