I just got word from Jake Bush that Hugh had been ill this weekend and has passed away. I know he was one of our first friends in the Boston area – a kind open mic host and a great bartender – an exquisite musician and a beautiful voice. As with so many meetings – we don’t know they’re important when they happen. I think the first mention of Hugh in the Journal is a later meeting – still some 16 years ago.

May 1st, 2005.” … Hugh McGowan played with us for most of the gig, and his percussion was elegant, and passionate, and so welcome… and he grinned as Heather’s harmonies locked, and as the rhythms shifted. I wish we could pocket him and bring him home …

I wish we could bring you home. We didn’t see you enough but it was always joyous when we did.

I remember him introducing us to Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. I remember him warning us about Eric Schwartz. I remember his music.

We Love you and we miss you.
