August 19th, 2021. The Main Street Open Mic.

Setting it up, making it go. Last week we canceled because it was 107 degrees out here.

I think playing outside is beginning to wear on me. I hated the fact that loading in tonight was so grueling, in the heat and the humidity, that when I was indicating to a band where to put their gear my finger was shaking. I can feel it in my playing, I can feel it in my bones. It’s generally 6 – 7 trips back and forth to the car to load out from the house, a few fewer than that when loading into to the venue (since I often get help on that end) and I’ve simply GOT to pare down the amount of gear that I’m bringing. Fortunately, at least for these Ellicott City open mics, I think I’ve demonstrated that their internet simply isn’t up to the task of Livestreaming the open mic, so at least I can nix my laptop and Live switching gear.

HOWEVER – I shouldn’t lead with the negative and it ain’t all about me! If my hands are shaking too much to play, I shouldn’t play – or I should put it off till later! I make the rules here! And other than the physical gruel (ew – Physical Gruel though… good band name) of it all it was a Lovely night. The weather eventually cooperated (just long enough – it rained on us as we broke down and broke camp) and the list was small, but mighty.

Tomas Drgon kicking off the list at the Main Street Open Air Open Mic.

And the high point of the night, for me at least, was Jeni’s son’s band who tore through a number of Metallica and Megadeth covers allowing our little open mic audience an opportunity to chant “DIE DIE DIE!!!” in the parking lot of Historic Ellicott City in a MOST undignified manner.

It was AWESOME.

Anywho – the Main Street Open Mic happens every Thursday night (weather dependent) in the courtyard of the Little Market Cafe in Ellicott City, MD. NORMALLY it’s run by Kelly Secret and is probably totally different – but tonight we had :

  1. ilyAIMY
  2. Tomas Drgon
  3. Russ Dauber
  4. Jimmy Stewart
  5. Possibly Washing Machine but possible DeeQ?
  6. Kyle Breeze
  7. Heather Aubrey Lloyd
  8. Bittersweet
  9. Charlotte Zollor
I’m not gonna say the video’s a COMPLETE clusterflop (totally a word) – but many parts failed over the course of the evening. The show IN PERSON was great, but will mostly have to Live in our memories!!!!
