Okay, going to an open mic Friday night and then hosting mine on Sunday were two very, very different entities. Being reminded how very different open mics can be, both in content and in hosting – well – they were like night and day! (or at least early evening and late afternoon).
Betwixt as-good-as-July-gets weather AND it being Kristen’s birthday, I knew we were gonna get a little slammed, but it was actually a little ridiculous. We’d gotten some difficult news earlier in the day so maybe the chaos was welcome. It forced me to buckle down and think about the things in front of me. The people I Love. The people that make things a little difficult. That weird feedback that turned out to be a purposeful sound from a keyboard. The following thoughts remain true….
a) I’m still kinda out of practice at this!
b) the option of different band configurations w multiple “house musicians” adds its own brand of delicious chaos
c) I DO Love this job
d) I think I’m pretty damned good at it
e) except for when I manage to my monitor and main mixes mixed up – I’m SO SORRY DAN KENNY!!!
f) Yup. Sometimes I play too fast. But we had dinner reservations, and I wanted to fit everyone in. So we started too early, I played too fast. But that actually means we got the show on the road and I freakin’ rocked. It was a joy. Kristen and Joey played with me. We had a LOT of regulars in the house coupled with a LOT of “where have you BEEN I’ve MISSED YOU!” and even one person who I sort of thought was dead.
g) okay. When you add your name to an open mic list. Add a bloody NUMBER.
+/- weather, we plan to have the Ellicott City Main Street Open Air Open Mic every Sunday from 5-7 (okay, for real, I’ll be more attentive and aim for SEVEN!!!) in Parking Lot D, in the Little Market Cafe’s courtyard – as long as the weather allows! Signup at 4.30pm. Family-friendly environment, 2 songs / 10 minutes, whichever’s shorter…
