December 24th, 2022. Snow Trolls.

Weirdly, among the myriad things that we have to worry about is our cat’s new screen addiction.

It’s 7.

Windchill of -7.

Nicely symmetrical and terrifyingly cold. Walking over to Amy’s last night was certainly not the coldest I’ve ever been, but the shock of that cold knifing through my face was pretty awful. Should’ve worn a mask!

80s-style Freezy Freakies from my brother? Check. Old long-sleeved shirt from Rick’s Music? Check. Two layers of flannel shirt plus coat? Happy Kermit knit cap? Check and check.

Jeans? Yeah. Should’ve worn something thicker.

Power was flickering at our place, but remained stable. Power’s out at Amy’s. Listening to Facebook power’s out all over and our immediate neighbourhood has patches all over. Amy’s neighbour’s neighbour had a tree come down in the neighbour’s yard and that’s simply going to take a while. I know there are a lot of angry people out there, but things only go so fast. And not a lot of sympathy for the idea that BG&E is going to be working around the clock through Christmas Eve and Christmas and beyond in absolutely insanely cold temperatures.

Kristen and Prince have the right idea. Just dress warm and fuzzy.

And of course people see this as a chance to get up on soapboxes and preach. “Look at my thermostat! If y’all would set you thermostat like MINE we wouldn’t have rolling blackouts!!!” These words of wisdom… I guess… assuming that heat is generally electric? Of course, I want to look this up and I THINK I’m surprised to see that nationally about 1/3 of people actually DO have some form of electric heat, but the maps are all colour coded so though I get the impression that’s a lower percentage in most places I’m not solid.

Still, the 2/3 of us that are using natural gas or (like us) heating oil – we’re not hitting the power grid at ALL with our heat so … I don’t want to pay for another refuel this season, but I’m not causing blackouts. And people can adjust the thermostat all they want… that’s not keeping the trees up.

And another person voices in about how “yeah, it’s all the people charging their electric cars!”

Sigh.

I will not feed the trolls. I will not feed the trolls.
