May 29th, 2023. Memorial Day.

After our rambling in Columbus, IN, exploring the campus of Indiana University and wandering the woods, we’d asked our friend Steve if he knew any cool places we should go and explore for Memorial Day when nothing else would be open. We figured there MIGHT be something KINDA cool somewhere in Indiana.

We had no freakin’ clue.

This isn’t that cool. In preparation for the idea that I wouldn’t have anything TOO cool to photograph when we got to this “Turkey Run” I was shooting pretty small town store fronts on the drive there…

Steve was talking up Turkey Run, which … I mean… Turkey Run? Every place has a place called Turkey Run and there’s nothing epic about turkeys or where they run. He told us that this was going to be something where you look around and you kinda can’t believe you’re still in Indiana. And… I think I was dubious.

I shouldn’t have been dubious.

We met up with his friend Allison and along with three VERY loquacious children to keep us company, proceeded to realize that EVERYONE had the same idea, but even with immense crowds on almost every inch of the trails, Turkey Run in Marshall, Indiana ABSOLUTELY delivered.

On top of everything else, Allison is a bloody science teacher and brought nets and sieves and little terrariums and we caught frogs and toads and turtles and butterflies and minnows and a whole lot of sunshine and some geodes to boot. Almost five miles of hiking later we’d climbed this and fallen down that and evaded “trail closed” signs till we were pleasantly excited. Went for ice cream and stickers and headed out…

Art on the wayyyyy to this “Turkey Run” place.
I accidentally turned on watermarks, but… man, Turkey Run delivered.
The forest opened up and revealed Sugar Run Creek. We knew there were a lot of people – all the parking lots were filled and various fields had been repurposed for automobile useage. Alllll the campgrounds on the way were filled. And sure enough – we found ALL the humans.
