I think a fair amount about being replaced. Not in the bullshit racist way that so many fellow old white guys seem to throw around, but in the legit, I’m HUMAN and responsible, on some level, for making sure the next gen of the species is as incredible as possible, because each generation builds on the talents, technologies, skills, beauty, of the previous, while hopefully avoiding our failures, lies and frailties.
It’s tough!
In the open mic world I strive to set aside all my competitiveness and encourage and admire those who are creating. The open mic is NOT ABOUT ME, and with my ego, there are days when I’m better about this than others.
IN a round about way I’m getting to the point that I really enjoyed my featured artist this evening, a duo created with the beauty of one generation building on the next, a teacher sitting back and letting his student shine even as they share a stage together. It’s perhaps the best of both worlds, basking in a talent you know you’ve had a hand in creating, while still knowing they are the star of the show.
