This day was achingly beautiful. I’m in danger of falling in love with Stockholm, but have been warned about the winters here. The weather was about 68°, sunny and breezy. Outside-all-day weather, I wish we could import it to you folks back home.
We indulged in the Swedish breakfast buffet at the hostel, then went on a 2-hour boat sightseeing tour which was just lovely – maybe my favorite thing we’ve done so far. The culture of water and boats and bridges here is awesome. Then we went to Skansen, “the world’s oldest open air museum” which overlooks the city. You can see reconstructed Swedish buildings, traditional crafts, Nordic animals – it’s a wonderful place.
Then we headed to Pelikan (a traditional Swedish restaurant) for dinner – OMG! Best meal I’ve had in recent memory. First time trying aquavit (and pickled herring). Though we had done a lot of walking already, we decided to walk about an hour back to the hostel. Good to keep moving after the meatballs!
Don’t want this day to end but also am ready to sleep. Thank you Ana and Alex for such a lovely time!
Our tour boatThe building with the masts is the Vasa Museum. Ana & Alex suggested rob and I go there while they hung out at Skansen, but after they described Skansen we decided we’d rather go there (glad we did).We got to see this amusement park closer up later. That boat is a hostel! We were only going to get a pastry here, but their lunch items looked so good! Plus we needed fuel for more walking. — at Skeppsbro Bageri. We took this ferry to another island; it’s part of the public transport system where you can use the metro card. The next several pics are from the Skansen park/museum. — at Skansen. They have a glassblowing shop; there was a bachelorette party making their own glass! We saw at least a couple of wedding parties here!Midsommar pole!Peacocks on the roof!Dinner at Pelikan – would highly recommend! — at Restaurant Pelikan.Ana asked the server for 4 aquavits he would recommend. This was an intimidating number of glasses but we got through it! I enjoyed these. And you’re supposed to drink them with……pickled herring! I’m not sure I would enjoy this any old place, but it was delicious here! This was herring 4 ways, including with horseradish, mustard, and lingonberries. And some very good cheese.I figured I had to get meatballs somewhere on this trip, and this seemed like the place. They were incredible!rob said he had a spiritual experience with his meal. Venison filet with morels stewed in calvados!!Ana had a traditional cheese pieAlex had “Biff Rydberg,” tenderloin with egg yolk and potatoes.Crossing yet another bridge to Långholmen islandSecond highest step count of the trip!
