Tonight our featured artist was the “Queer-fronted & oddly orchestrated Boy Meets Pearl [who] offer modern takes on sea shanties, circus waltzes and Victorian Music Hall sing-a-longs!”… an accurate put completely inadequate description of this beautifully eclectic group of musicians. Fronted by the spectacularly charismatic Christian Crowley and Sea Griffin, Boy Meets Pearl (no graphic design-trained rob could ever use the abbreviation “BMP”) explores those sensual tales and oft-bawdy songs with instrumentation that careens from Glockenspiel to Chapman Stick, visiting autoharp and accordion and any number of idiosyncratic devices along the way.
Strangely – this sounded so much like what Jennifer Cutting and her Ocean Orchestra did that Jennifer Cutting and Steve Winick came out for the first time! We had a massive list, an exhausting but satisfying night, and though my body still HURTS from the sprains and twists of Sunday, the music made it all worth it.
