When I got back from Morsbergers tonight, after the lights had gone out briefly at the bar but were STILL out at the house, I posted : “No power in Baltimore means the stars come out. It is beautiful and strange.” My cousin used it as a snearky way (both sneaky and snarky, sneer’s in there somewhere too) to comment on how city people can’t see anything anyways (she’s got a lot of opinions about January 6ers and more extreme Trumpisms, so I’m proud of her for her ‘subtlety’) but I used it as an opportunity to see the stars.

In post, the power was out for only about 63 seconds and I SHOULD write a little review of my Allen & Heath CQ20b to express that I’m pleasantly impressed with it’s reboot time of 9 seconds and that it didn’t take TOO much disk repair and internet sleuthing to recover the audio recording. But at the time it felt like we were in the dark for quite a while, holding cellphones up, encouraging Dan Ingram to finish his song. The stage at Morsbergers got built OVER the emergency lights (oops) so it was fucking DARK and even when the bar came back up, it turns out we were the only ones. Going home, the neighbouring venue never recovered power, the streetlights and traffic lights were dead to the Beltway, and 7 Eleven was the sole gleaming beacon betwixt Morsbergers and home.

My visit to 7 Eleven to get something hot to take home was mirthful. Guy A working the grave shift said “no matter what happens, the lights are ALWAYS on at 7 Eleven! We probably gotta generator in the basement!” Guy B said “this is 7 Eleven! NO WAY we have a basement!”
We do this every Sunday night at Morsbergers at 713 Frederick Rd, Catonsville, MD, 21228. Signup at 6.30, music at 7pm. Enter through the back at the LARGER of the two doors! (the other entrances are straight to the bar side and Boba Fett won’t always point the way!) For information about the photos and videos and usage thereof, please visit https://www.ilyaimy.com/robsopenmics/#videosAndPhotos!
A special note to DRUMMERS : recently our friend Charlie’s been coming out and setting up a kit! You’re probably welcome to play it if you ask him nicely! Though Morsbergers has a lot of metal bands on weekends, the open mic night tends to be more singer/songwriter – please be prepared to play accordingly (hot rods encouraged).

Then shit got weird.
“Of course we’ve got a basement! That’s where we turn PEOPLE INTO SOUP! YOU THINK IT’S A DREAM! BUT WE CALL IT 7 ELEVEN!!!!”
My local 7 Eleven graveshift is my FAVOURITE post-show entertainment.
I made my way home. Walked around the block in the dark. Felt out the edges of our blackout and came home to my cat, my Kristen, and ALL of our candles. Power returned about 12 hours later.
(but we here in the cities still see just fine, thank you very much)
