Connecticut is freezing. As are all the homes. The coffeehouses, normally a bastion of warmth with steam rising from mugs and condensation fogging the windows, are cold.
The White Rose house convinced me to leave my coat on, even with a space heater and a half-dozen other bodies, including two drummers. Though Thursday’s show at the Best Buy outside of Trenton was kind of a waste of time, last night at Victoria’s Station was painfully good. Painful in that I had one of my “relive” moments on stage, where all the music was doubly intense and exquisite.
Victoria Station is Christmas. Lights and smells and the familiar friends and the biting wind outside. We were performing in a different corner than normal, which was a little strange, but it gave us the vantage of a balcony, sans the feeling of removal of a big stage, or the distance of Columbia Bar. Talking to the owners of the troubles and travailles of a coffeehouse owner it’s hard to believe there’s so much sweat and agony under the surface here. If I had a better battery I could be here for days eating quiche and coffee. And have a Hella-case of the jitters to show for it.
All day yesterday before the show had me sitting with my laptop recreating a client’s website in a user-editable CMS – which is taking longer than it ought to – if only because I’m completely reliant on being online. If I could install my own virtual webserver it would be simpler and stabler (and more easily transferable) but my efforts to do that have sort of sucked. I know, but you’re not here to listen to me bitch…
Today’s been more musical. Heather’s recording vocals on White Rose Confession’s new CD and it’s been a little slower than I’d kind of expected. Still, it’s an interesting insight into how they work. It’s amazing to me to watch Andy just throw guitar licks at Heather for her to replicate with her voice – he can play anything he hears and it’s something I aspire to, but have no idea how to actually do. There simply seems to be no limit to what he’s able to do on guitar. Understated and elegant, I often underestimate his sheer proficiency.
Creatures of the Night. The song’s going to be absolutely delicious when it’s finished. Damn.
