So – did I catch Heather’s cold? Or is it allergies? Are my eyes itching because they’re finally succumbing to the scouring pollens of middle Ohio, kicked up by the passing rains? Or is it just that I’ve only slept for about 8 hours over the last 60? No way to tell I guess, not until I’ve had some rest. We’re about 2 hours away from that. I got sick shortly after leaving Findlay, OH and our ETA for Pittsburgh is now 2am, much to everyone’s chagrin.
My body seems destined to betray us on the late runs.
Oh god. Runs.
In any case – the show at Coffee Amici was sadly underpopulated. It was agonizing to see the front two tables empty. It was a fun show, we played lots of stuff that no-one out there had heard before. Experimented with new stuff, got weirdly creative with monkey-theory, got nuts at the end. And we did well enough that I decided I needed to buy some art of the walls – but it IS discouraging to see such a small turnout in such a great room. I feel like I must be doing something wrong – but I’m not sure who else I should be talking to. Do we have to get one-on-one to get people to come out? And if THAT’S the case what does it say? People will come listen to my music if I guilt them into it? In general feel kind of shitty.
Oh god. Shitty.
At least I keep my sense of humour! The Flying Cat last night was really amazing – and after an expectation of a really light night there it was really ENcouraging to see such a great turnout there. By comparison – even though probably we had as many people tonight as last night – it was probably just the expectation vs reality thing that got me down tonight.
We’re passing through construction and skunk stench somewhere in eastern Ohio, and I can feel Heather eyeballing me… but all I can do is SWEAR that I’m feeling a LOT better.
And so we’ll get into Pittsburgh in another hour and 50 minutes. We’ll sleep there till about 10 in the morning at which point we need to carefully navigate the city as we evade the rolling road closures of the Pittsburgh Marathon. The maps of these closures are conveniently colour coded so I’ve had to ask Heather for lots of help to figure out which is the green path, vs the orange one vs the red one vs the brown one. Sigh. Colour accessibility! It’ll be another 4+ hours to Heather’s house where I’ll snag the rob-mobile and roll ANOTHER hour south to set up and run my open mic at Old Bowie Town Grille…. That’ll wrap up at about 10, I’ll get on the road and be home a little after 11…. Eye on the prize: in 23 hours I’ll be home!
The Infinity Room at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum. It was actually a lot darker than my camera gives the room credit for and it was downright disorienting to boot. I’d Love to have been in on the meeting where the exhibit designers chatted about this concept. It’s beautiful, but odd. A memorial for those who have died as we expand into local space. Apollo 1, Columbus and Challenger. These things have me in tears every time.
Heather feet. Last month’s schedule kerfuffle has us mortified, but both ilyAIMY at Coffee Amici did everything in our power to let people in Findlay, OH know we were REALLY coming this time.
