Tonight we played at Iota in Arlington, VA. Always a fantastic venue, but it was the Sunday of the Dead (the Sunday after Thanksgiving – a hideous travel day) and one that most venues and bands dread as destined to be a loss. We picked up the show at the last second and didn’t expect much draw (Hell, I had an email from the owner saying that draw wouldn’t be a factor, because the KNOW about this night)… but we still had about 15 people come out – not the WORST turnout Iota has ever seen – and just performed really, really well. I Love my band. I Love playing under Christmas lights.

Setting up the drums at Iota in Arlington, VA.

It was a very focused show, playing to a number of people who I haven’t seen in a very, very long time, and a couple of new fans who’d come out because of posters or newspaper articles. My favorite ilyVIRGIN for the night was a guy who’d seen us at the Takoma Park Folk Festival over a year ago for three minutes while waiting for a bus. He’d gotten on our mailing list and had been waiting for the opportunity to come see us… finally the stars aligned… Friends from all over the country who happened to stick around in town for a little bit longer past Thanksgiving, a couple of new friends from HMT… it was a good social night, slow and beautiful and very, very intense.

Sharif’s just weird. But we knew that.
The iota Christmas tree. I Love Christmas – I Love the lights, the season, the cold and even the music. I Love playing under a Christmas tree, and it added to my mood immeasurably. I wasn’t glib, I wasn’t very funny, but I was heart-felt and more genuine than I sometimes I am. I felt very in Love, in a weird way.
On the drive back from Iota, Heather had to stop at the drug store to get hair gunk. She left Rowan and I in the car. She came back to find us giggling and photographing one another. Yes… giggling. Hell, I figured it was better you heard it from ME.
So, one of the big uses we were going to have for the attendance-wise-throw-away Iota show was to get decent recordings of a couple of previously uncaptured songs. Well, after getting past the Iota “we don’t let nobody record or photograph nothin!” policy (I always thought that this was solely applied to audience members – but I was wrong, I can only assume that this is to keep anyone from ever having any proof that they’ve GONE to Iota, allowing it keep a ninja-like reputation) we got really nice recordings of the first couple of songs, but then my guitar started buzzing. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was, so it was on with the show… it wasn’t till the next day that Rowan and I really examined my Alvarez and found that I’d worn away a section of the winding, allowing a full inch or so to move freely on the steel core and causing the buzz. Fuck.
