It’s 9.42am – and it’s what I’m hoping is the tail-end of a long, long night. My mom’s been in the hospital this weekend for gall bladder surgery and what WAS supposed to be a routine in-and-out procedure has turned into something of a nightmare.
I got a phone call at 3.20 in the morning from a man with a thick Indian accent telling me that my mother was going into surgery in the next couple of hours because she was bleeding internally. I rushed over to the hospital where people totally failed to be able to tell me much more and where my mom was in a lot of pain and whereI was quickly out of my depth, not knowing what to do or who to talk to…
I won’t go into a LOT of detail – but in short, the doctors went in, fixed the bleeding, and as of now I’m still waiting for her to get out of recovery, but the doctor is saying that everything should be fine (and he then knocked on wood). It’s just been a long night of worrying, of thinking that I’ve spent too much time in hospitals, of thinking how much nicer this one is than most of the other dingy purveyors of emergency health I’ve had the displeasure of encountering recently.
The sun is long up and I’m craving a chance to go to bed – I hadn’t fallen asleep yet, I don’t think, when the phone rang – but I need to see my mom when she gets back in, and I need to see if I can take her a Slurpee, which is just about all she seems to want out of Life at the moment.
THAT bed going by at speed THERE looks promising…
Heather hosted the open mic at College Perk last Tuesday night. She looks like a welcoming host, does she not? Perhaps a little… TOO welcoming… hrm.
One of the best things about the College Perk open mic, of course, is the fact that I’m surrounded by friends – even some who haven’t been around for quite a while. John Thayer is tuning his guitar as Dan Zimmerman plays – we haven’t seen John in a long, long time as he’s been at school out in California. He’s back with a very different sound and some very cool tricks up his sleeve. It was very good to have the distraction for a while before running back to the hospital for another night with my mom.
Saturday night we played at the New Deal Cafe and played well. I think NOW we’re cutting off the recordings that are going on the new CD, but i think a lot of stuff from Saturday night will be on there. Adam Day was home from college in Ithaca, New York – and we were really proud to let him open for us. He’s still one of the finest singer / songwriters I know. Heather got to sing with him for a little while, which made her pretty happy.
