August 5th, 2022. Distracted.

Friday evening, our timing predicated by Real Life, we race to load the van before the weather arrives…

I’d been writing a Journal entry as we were driving north on I-83 and I’m really bummed that it’s mysteriously vanished. I can’t even blame The Cloud. Or the CLOUDS. Or whatever.

Tis a shame, but I guess I was also pretty distracted. Mayhaps it wasn’t that good. I mean… normally when I’m typing in the car Kristen’s working on something and Heather’s driving and I have my thoughts to myself, but tonight there was Rowan to talk to and Ella was singing to herself and Richard and Heather were talking about their kids and… well… Kristen was working on SOMETHING.

In any case, it was a nervewracking drive at times as we loaded the car while racing the weather, and then raced AHEAD and THROUGH the weather, got to the hotel and unloaded BEFORE the weather… the wind was a distraction, the rain was a distraction, and even when the storm grumbled far off to the east of us, Ella’s concern over the spectacular “grumpy cloud” were a bit of a distraction too.

We manage to get in and on the road – and then the weather catches up!

The upcoming show at Musikfest doesn’t seem real yet. This hotel, ramshackle and not-as-cheap-as-it-oughta-be for all it’s issues and smells, is yet ANOTHER distraction, and the cigarette burns on the sink, switching rooms because of water leaking across the floor, and the struggle with the carts that seem on the verge of falling apart, all seem far more real than our festival appearances.

And I guess I got distracted and deleted my post. I bet it was more poetic than this. My highway posts usually are.

I continue to be absolutely AMAZED by this freakin’ van, which SHOULD get us to the festival and back on one (massive) tank of gas, is fitting all six of us, all of our instruments and various pieces and parts, gear and clothing, PLUS the stuff that comes along with the surprise presence of Ella! I was really worried about fitting it all, and yeah, it was a little tight, but my car Tetris remains STRONG and though I was dubious of Heather simply stating “it’ll all fit, because it HAS to”… as usual she was right.

Hopefully it all still fits tomorrow!

Alright. Now what do I do about the weird-ass flashing light on the wall? It’s a distraction!

The stunningly volumetric clouds pacing us as we pass through PA. Now that I think about it, we were probably pretty east-bound at this point, so the storm would’ve been pacing us to the south…
Bah. Well, good thing we brought granola bars, cause there ain’t no breakfast foo.
