Bob Cassilly’s masterpiece. One of the coolest places on Earth. The City Museum in Saint Louis, MO. There’s no way I can write about this place and give it justice. It’s just something that has to be experienced. Whether it’s climbing through rebar steel tunnels or sliding down 7 stories of twisting slide, it’s a great way to remind yourself of what it feels like to be a kid again – where it’s not behaviour or excitement that divides the ages, but what holes you can fit through.
This is only ever going to be MOSTLY a photo dump, as I can’t help but aggressively document, if only so that I don’t think back on it and think of visits to City Museum as a highly surrealistic dream.
On the one hand, I’m very sad they don’t book bands any more, cause playing here is simply the strangest joy, but on the other hand, it’s nice to come in and just PLAY… not music. Just play.
We got lost, found some favourite places, popped up in unexpected ones. Met some people, talked to some, gave directions to others. I bumped my head hard enough to see stars and we both came out with skinned elbows. We got a pretzel. Discovered they’d removed all the sea turtles and replaced the aquariums with terrariums and introduced axolotls. Unending evolution is the disordered order of this place and I hope it never changes….err…. meaning I hope it never STOPS changing!
It was a hundred degrees in the parking lot after we’d finally wound down at the Museum and we went on our second mission of the day : Abraxis Beer by Perennial Brewing. We discovered it in North Carolina, couldn’t get it in Maryland, figured we’d have to go to the source : Saint Louis MO.
It’s seasonal, but we called around and chased rumours and eventually were well-rewarded about 20 minutes west of the city. Mischief managed – we went back to Susan’s, chased the ducks out of her swimming pool and … SWAM! You bet we’re going to sleep well tonight.
A good day.
