June 24th, 2024. Day 5. Woluwe.

We were fascinated that grass grows on the tram tracks! We wondered how they mow it…

Day 5:

We decided we needed a recuperation day. Stuck close to home in Woluwe – took a short walk around one of their neighborhood parks, got lunch at a cafe and rather embarrassed ourselves trying to order & communicate with the staff in French (it was bound to happen sometime…this is a less touristy area). I decided to make dinner for everyone, so we visited the local market for a few groceries. The parmigiano reggiano is cheap here!

Just part of a very large park – nice to have this just a few minutes walk away.
— at Parc des Sources.
The sandwich of shame. Rob tried to order a ham & cheese sandwich, and the woman asked him detailed questions about ham . Somehow, he ended up with egg, cheese and vegetables (no ham). It wasn’t bad! I was nervous about ordering my salad because the people in front of me seemed to be doing a lot of customization. But apparently the one I ordered is straightforward. Or, the woman saw what was happening with the sandwich and decided not to ask me questions . Well, it’s our duty as Americans to embarrass ourselves, right? Tomorrow we are going to downtown Brussels where we hear most staff speak English…
First time cooking on an induction stove – I’m a fan! A large pot of water boiled in 7 minutes. For those curious, I made pasta with lardons (bacon), mushrooms, zucchini, yellow pepper, garlic, basil and lemon. And affordable real Parmesan cheese!
Our nephew Max recreated the infamous Michael Jackson – Blanket incident
So y’all know our song Natural 20…it really is true that I “just don’t play those games.” Last night we played Wingspan which I’ve played once before and found it very difficult to understand/enjoy, but I thought “maybe the second time will be easier.” Nope…I felt DUMB. I eventually gave up. Tonight, we played Harry Potter Labyrinth, which was more my speed. Rob found it frustrating though. Our brains work in different ways! I have a hard time with many rules, complicated cards and many pieces…
They have a DVD rental place right across the street!!  And it also sells alcohol! What??!
