March 13th, 2019.

Before heading to the Tuesday night open mic over at White Horse Black Mountain we dropped by our hosts’ gallery : the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts is an incredible collective – and the artists that form the co-op vary in aesthetic from the extremely refined (like Ty and Julie’s practically Victorian work) to the more typically “crafty”, to political to whimsical to palm sheep. We could’ve spent a LONG time here… but we had stuff to get to!

Okay, we’d gotten our visual art fix, so it was time to get our BBQ fix. However, this being Asheville, apparently this has to come with an art fix too! Here’s a bunch of graffiti outside of (and some inside of) 12 Bones Smokehouse. The food was delicious too, but not quite as photogenic.

Tuesday March 12th found us hitting up the open mic and Irish session at White Horse Black Mountain in Montreat, NC. We’d driven back and forth past this a bunch of times while attending SERFA and though it was a little off the beaten track from Asheville itself, there’s one big reason why I was like “we’ve GOT to check this out!!!”…
Yup, the owner is another musician with the name Robert Hinkal. Or… close enough as to pay no never mind. Very cool to meet him, though I was kind of more fascinated by this than he was. It’s strange – for years I’ve never met anyone else with my name and in the last month or so not only do we have the ALMOST of Bob Hinkle in Montreat, but I’ve run across what I believe to be the only other Rob Hinkal on Instagram – a photographer in Pennsylvania! Madness. MADNESS!!!
