I truly despise social media. I think it’s at the root of a LOT of today’s ills, normalizing the most disgusting among us because intelligent, kind people are too “cultured” to shut down the evil among us. I count myself among them – I think of myself as smart and moderately moral – and I’m one of those who, given the tools on Facebook and Twitter choose to look away from idiots and racists rather than take them to task because I can’t fight every fight and die on every hill. And yet, maybe that’s how the whole thing falls apart?
I’ve curated my feeds because I have a Facebook account to advertise my band and my brand – not because I think it connects me well with other individuals. I HATE having this heinous thing, and if I thought I could run my businesses effectively without them in the world today, I wouldn’t think twice about closing every account I had. But even in a feed where I unfollow every conspiracy theorist and every god-lover and everyone who mentions “what was SO BAD about slavery” – scrolling through today I encounter someone amplifying idiocy, another expressing flat-Earth sympathy because he misunderstands new scientific discoveries, base hate and misogyny, homophobia and repulsive non-humanity.
I want to just shut you all off. Alas, it seems my fate to sing to you instead.
Gonna try some new songs tomorrow. They won’t be new to EVERYONE because I’m a slow learner and these tunes have been floating around for a while. With any luck I won’t make an absolute fool of myself. Good luck, me.
