New Year’s Eve was fun. Strange. Odd. Moody. Personally, I spent about 8 hours sitting in front of my computer running First Night Winchester which was at FIRST extremely stressful when things weren’t perfect, but then got into a rhythm and went faster than I was expecting.
I had some downtime and tuned into a couple of other webfeeds just to see what others were doing. First Night Talbot (which is what we played LAST year – ha – our last gig of our last sane year!) got cut off halfway through for copyright infringement but up till then a) was absolutely stunning making use of artists’ music videos b) was making me feel like all the paranoid I have about USING such material was misl- oh… there it went…
It made me doubly proud of what Winchester had hired me to do. It wasn’t as polished. It was kind of a cheap way of doing it – but it was eight hours of programming including a wide variety of STUFF (talking horse! lizard man!! ilyAIMY!!!) with constant greetings from the board itself. I thought it really was – personal – in a way that other programs weren’t. And I’d like to think that counts for a lot.
It certainly showed in the interaction. Lots of back-and-forth on the comments, lots of COMMUNICATION – a lot of not letting people just WATCH ON TV but getting people to say “hi”. I think that’s important right now.
It wasn’t huge. I’d have liked to see a thousand people tuned in rather than 150 – and they’ve unpublished the video now to do some editing in post so I don’t know what the number’s WOULD’VE reached but it was 5000 as of New Year’s Day. Web metrics don’t mean nothin’ more than they mean – but still proud of what was created. It showed a human touch… we ain’t past needing that.
