October 10th, 2023. The SPARK w Anna P.S.

A new release from the auther of ye olde Calvin & Hobbs. This is no doubt a different animal and I’ve been waiting eagerly for it’s release since I read about it early this year!

Before I could head to Takoma Park for my open mic, I had to pick up some gear and meet with some people over at Sandy Spring Museum, and before I could do THAT I had to rip open my new package from Bill Watterson! Yes – THAT Bill Watterson! I had to save it for my return in the eeeevening because I want to savour it sans stress… but I’ve been excitedly waiting for it for months.

At SSM I picked up mics and dropped knowledge. I knew I was running late but I hate to take a moment to appreciate the fabric monoliths out in the gardens. I haven’t read up on the who or what, but they were stunning in the sunshine and worth the couple of minutes it took to explore them.

And off to Takoma Park for open mic. We do this every Tuesday. Signup before 7. I start at 7. 7112 Willow Avenue in Takoma Park, MD. robsopenmics.ilyaimy.com for more information. Tonight we were joined by featured artist Anna p.s.

“Indie folk musician Anna p.s. conveys a sense of weariness throughout her simple yet resonant songs, but it’s a weariness that keeps a blanket of hope tucked up under its chin, even as the rain keeps falling outside the windows. Grace always lurks around the corner on tunes that layer delicate vulnerability over the hearty stock of this songwriters’ spirit. With technical acumen acquired during an early career as an audio engineer, and a humble but confident stage presence groomed as a founding member of indie roots rock band Shiny Shiny Black, Anna stepped out as a solo musician in 2014. She’s been on the road intermittently ever since. Her debut LP Umbrella, released in July 2016, showcases her signature sonic blend of melancholy, hope, and resilience.”

Her words, not mine. I admire her as a road-warrior and as a survivor. A woman who makes soaps and earrings and houses to boot, looping vocals and guitar, flute and foot. I was really saddened that her visit lined up with our trip to Canada and we didn’t get to do the Lair together the next night, but even just my open mic set gave me some Anna time, and that’s imperative.
