Tonight’s an angry night. As Trump deploys the National Guard a couple of miles down the road I’ve been getting worried texts and rumours swirl. “Can you see the troops from the open mic?” We haven’t been shut down yet and I can’t imagine it’s likely. We’re just not that important. Tonight we had a LOT of protest songs, and I started off with a couple of my own. It made me feel like I was doing SOMETHING.
There was a stupid rumour going around that martial law was kicking off in DC at 8pm. I was sad that I couldn’t convince my kids that that’s not what they needed to worry about (the closest “truth” is that there’s a curfew for under 18 year-olds down in Navy Yard) but they heard it on TikTok so… yeah. Like, when you can’t even convince people to worry about the “right” thing I’m not sure what real hope there is, but we’re here to sing our hearts out, so that’s what we’re gonna do.
On the UPSIDE, Johanna, a concertina player who used to frequent my Board and Brew open mic ELEVEN YEARS AGO popped in! She played a freakin’ WHITNEY HOUSTON cover and a filk version of Pink Pony Club.
Truly, the world still has the capacity to amaze.
