Oh my god. For as much as I’m grateful that our old friends Jason and Alissa stayed up to hang out last night / this morning – I could FEEL my sense slipping away from the conversation. Today we got up and they went out and did something while we puttered and then we got out and ate something while THEY puttered – inasmuch as anyone putters with a 6 year-old in tow. This morning I woke up to dawn light and their little grey cat, Madison, pushing my water bottle over while staring at me, which was then set back up by the 6-year old – while staring at me. Their daughter was clearly THRILLED to have visitors and couldn’t wait for us to wake up and PLAY WITH HER.
Tonight we played the Switchboard in Toledo, and we really had no expectations. Turns out that the Switchboard itself is named after – of course – a switchboard – that came with the building back when it was a mobster hideout with a couple of dozen phone lines wired into various criminal enterprises.

We played the sun down and Jason and his family came out and made up, at times, a full half of our audience. It could’ve been a really sad kind of night except the weather was PERFECT, the light was STUNNING, and the child danced frenetically to EVERYTHING we threw down.
The number of somersaults done by their daughter in the dusty urban parking lot made me flinch a little but she insisted that she wanted to show off how she was SOOOO good at such things.
We are choosing sociability over sleep once again and stayed up far too late talking Life and the World and swapping stories. We’ll pay for this eventually, but later? It’s for later.
