October 12th, 2025. Good and Loud to Be Home.

Home means omelets.

Coffee makes too much noise. I’m slow to rise this morning and I don’t want to run water from the faucet because it’s too loud. And I don’t want to grind the beans because it’s too loud. I didn’t want to listen to the news this morning because it was all too loud, and I squoze the cat a little extra because he was very loud. The water’s getting hotter and hotter, and angrier, and louder, and it will be an absurd relief to hear the little button *click* and the roaring of the boil slow, because it is all so very, very loud.

Another good night. Thursday nights at Dark Horse in Annapolis are very much our Saturdays.

Not that I don’t enjoy being loud. But today. No. hush. Quiet down.

Oooh, here’s my favourite part. It gets quieter and quieter.

The much heralded rains of the feared Nor’Easter that people were very, very worried about yesterday has failed to materialize, though we probably lost most of our audience to it last night. We drove through a bit of a squall last night on the way home from Monocacy, but it didn’t stick. We loaded back into the house in the dry quiet of a city on Saturday night that’d already been chased home.

Friday October 10th I got to run sound for Lulu’s Fate at Kristen’s dad’s community in Ellicott City, and there’s worse ways to spend your time. They were awesome as always.
Last night with the stage set at Monocacy Brewing. Probably our last show outside in Frederick for the season. The sky went momentarily BLACK and chased off our audience with the threat of a cold rain, but then the sunset beneath the clouds and filled the courtyard with golden light. We played a great show to the remaining audience but the damage was done. Oh, and then the sky went black again, but that time it was just night time.

This morning the promised gales and rains are holding off for another 16 hours or so and maybe Monday will see the fruits of the Atlantic’s labour. Or maybe it won’t.

It feels like we’ve been playing non-stop since we got home, which isn’t entirely true. We got home  late on last Wednesday and spent most of Thursday moving slowly and recovering and hiding from the world.

LAST Friday at Monocacy was a solemn affair with us doing more than going through the motions but less than our full dazzling selves. For as beautiful as the environment was, there was a moodiness to us that hopefully didn’t broadcast too loudly in the music. Kristen and Heather and I were still beat from the road and kinda not ready to be back together, and we just hadn’t SEEN Joey and Rowan for a long time. I think we had a couple of minor trainwrecks (one of Heather’s songs and then a moment in Hands during which I just got lost in what I was doing and… didn’t come back). In general I think we had a good time but we didn’t SPARKLE. We had a great audience and it felt strange that… here we are at our monthly show, from an outside observer’s point of view nothing had changed, except we’d traveled some 6700 miles between our regularly-scheduled appearances and people KNEW it.

What sucks, is that we’ve had a couple of really JOYOUS shows between then and last night’s show at Monocacy, but last night was also moody and snappish. And it’s hard to tell where the source is, but I’ve got my suspicions. The threatened rain and a moment of glowing cloud meant we had a small audience that hung in through to the end of the night but they were fervent.

But between those two Monocacies we had two really fun shows. New Deal Café was everything it should be, and Dark Horse was everything WE should be.
