Tonight me and Joey Campfire / Joseph Swelterpants / host of the New Deal Cafe decided to swap open mic nights. I was pretty sure I’d have a good time, I was not incorrect.
It was a much broader crowd than I’d expected, which is absolutely a great thing, and it really got my gears turning about what I could, should, and NEED to change about the SPARK. And it made me ALMOST miss having the drumkit at Morsbergers. It DID make me miss having a DRUMMER. The kit without the talent don’t mean nothin.
Incredible energy, great talent. Not a lot of original music, but what was there was a joy. I met some new people, pulled names out of a rabbit’s head, and generally had a good time.

I also had Kenny’s Kale for what is no doubt the last time. Once again the New Deal Cafe has stumbled into financial difficulties and blamed their food service. Whether or not the kitchen or the kitchen’s owner is the problem, I’m KEENLY aware of a pattern at the New Deal: economic issues? Board gets angsty and makes a lot of negative and often vaguely accusatory public statements about how awful their food service is. They get rid of the aforementioned food service, they do a bunch of fundraisers to make ends meet, get a new food service, and everyone waxes poetic about how great the LAST food service was and how the new one just isn’t as good as the old one (most recently, the previous food service who they got rid of set up shop a couple of doors down and has been running a thriving business ever since).
Sigh. So, a night of great food and great music. Good spirits and joy. Don’t worry Joey, your job is secure. SPARK pays me.
