My brother and his wife, Halloween a billion years ago. We’ve found MANY old photographs fishing around my mom’s house…
Even *I*, snow Lover that I am, am tired of the ice and cold
by now. And what we’ve got on the ground barely counts as anything else. It
LOOKS like snow. It still smells like snow. But outside is just layer upon
layer of insane ice. A word that I feel like has additional connotations that I
don’t want to actually dive into.
My brother has arrived at his layover (stopover?) in England.
He’s safely back out of the “United” States and Kristen and I are returning to
slower mornings. Having a week with George was really, really good. He’s fun,
fiercely intelligent and though we have over 30 years of differing context, he’s
still largely the brother I knew.
It’s interesting to make the parallel comparisons: we both
like complexity, we both like to read, we’re both TRAVELERS though my mileage
is more cars less countries and his is more countries more planes. He was
showing me pictures of India last night and casually mentions trips to Spain
and Italy and Slovenia and places that I’ll probably never see. Work trips mostly, but that’s
a lot of exotic climes, and my brother, like and me and like our dad before us,
is never really satisfied just to stick to the office route on such a trip. He’s
explored and wandered and gotten kicked out of places. Who’d have thunk that THAT’S a Hinkal trait.

George and I spent a LOT of time in my mom’s backyard. Leaving no trace. Legolassin.

Even the flames don’t get through the snow.
The week sort of culminated in Saturday night’s birthday
show, a sold-out night at Island Pride Oasis. For all that we probably
overstayed our welcome and I’m not really looking forward to my next night
there, it was nice to undermine the memory of the LAST time I played there,
Rowan and I playing solely to Heather, Robustiano, and a guy who’d been on his way to
the bathroom.
It was a Lovey dovey kind of night, lots of hugs (many
captured by my friend Eryn Michel who now ALWAYS has permission to nab my
camera) but a sloppy show. Listening back I’m a little saddened that we weren’t
tighter, but it felt a little more like a party and less of a ego trip than my
50th. Island Pride’s really a good sized room for us.
I’m rambling. It’s Monday morning and I should be getting a
couple of work items done before giving myself a well-deserved day of recovery
and rest. My mind is meandering. Kristen’s puttering. The cat is taking his
post-sleep nap.
Now if only I didn’t think of abductions and violence every
time I look out the window and think the word “ice”.
